EnduranceStep & metronome
YMCA step test · 3-minute step test
Purpose
Use this test to check aerobic fitness with little space and no machine. Your client steps up and down for 3 minutes, then you count their pulse for 1 minute.
A lower recovery heart rate means the heart came back down faster.
Procedure
- Preparation
- Use a step 30.5 cm (12 in) high and set a metronome to 96 beats per minute. Your client sits and rests for 2 minutes before the test.
- Equipment
- A 30.5 cm step, a metronome and a stopwatch
Step to the beat
Start the stopwatch. Your client steps up, up, down, down, one foot on each beat. That is 24 steps a minute.
Keep going for 3 minutes
Your client keeps to the beat for 3 minutes without stopping.
Sit down
At 3 minutes, your client sits down straight away.
Count the pulse
Within 5 seconds, start counting the pulse at the wrist. Count for a full minute.
Scoring
The score is the number of beats counted in that minute.
Interpretation
Compare results on the same step height and beat. The calculator shows the heart rate without a label.
